Summary: The core materials for the brake pads (friction pads) of crane brakes are powder metallurgy sintered materials (iron-based/copper based), asbestos free organic composite materials, and semi metallic friction materials. Among them, powder metallurgy is preferred for heavy-duty and high-temperature conditions, while asbestos free organic composite materials or semi metallic materials are commonly used for general conditions.
The working principle and key characteristics of crane brake pads:
Normally closed design: Most crane brakes are "power off brakes" (normally closed), which release the brakes when powered on and generate braking force by spring force holding the brake pads and friction with the brake wheels when powered off, ensuring automatic and safe parking when powered off.
Friction pair structure: The brake pads (brake pads/brake shoes) are directly attached to the surface of the brake wheel or brake disc that rotates with the shaft, and braking is achieved by consuming kinetic energy through friction.
Safety requirements: As one of the three major safety components of the crane, it is necessary to ensure that each mechanism stops accurately and reliably, and it is strictly prohibited to have insufficient braking torque or slip due to wear and tear.
Application scenarios of crane brake pads:
Heavy/high temperature working conditions (such as metallurgical cranes, large tonnage main hooks): Powder metallurgy (iron-based/copper based) materials must be selected to withstand the high heat load generated by frequent braking.
General/conventional operating conditions (such as building tower cranes and trolley operating mechanisms): NAO organic composite materials or semi metallic materials are widely used to balance performance, noise, and cost.
