Summary: Ship cranes (especially lifting and slewing mechanisms) must be equipped with normally closed brakes, which rely on spring force to automatically brake in a non powered state; Usually, it is necessary to meet the requirements of dual braking or high safety factor to cope with sea waves and heavy load conditions, and comply with the regulations of the classification society for anti slip hooks and emergency braking.
The brake system of a ship crane mainly consists of a brake actuator (brake pad/disc, brake wheel/drum, brake arm), a power drive device (electric hydraulic thruster, electromagnet, pneumatic/hydraulic cylinder), and a core component of a normally closed reset spring.
According to the structure, it can be divided into external block type, disc type, belt type, etc., and the lifting and variable amplitude mechanism must adopt a normally closed design.
Core components:
Brake actuators: including brake pads (or brake pads), brake arms, brake wheels (drums) or brake discs, which generate braking torque through friction pairs.
Drive and release device: commonly used as electric hydraulic thruster, electromagnet or pneumatic/hydraulic cylinder, responsible for overcoming spring force to open the brake when powered/ventilated.
Reset and energy storage components: Strong compression springs or heavy hammers ensure automatic brake holding (normally closed characteristic) in case of power failure/loss of pressure, preventing heavy objects from falling.
Auxiliary adjustment mechanism: including clearance adjustment bolts, wear compensation devices, and brake opening indicator switches, used to maintain stable braking clearance and torque.
Main structural types:
External block brake: the most commonly used type, with double tile blocks symmetrically holding the brake wheel, the shaft is not subjected to bending moment, suitable for lifting and operating mechanisms.
Disc brake: With good heat dissipation and compact structure, it is commonly used in high-speed shafts or space limited situations, and can be divided into normally closed pneumatic/hydraulic types.
Belt brake: using brake bands to wrap the brake wheels, with a simple structure but subjected to bending moments on the shaft, it is currently less commonly used.
Internal expansion shoe type: Metal boots expand outward for braking, commonly seen in specific vehicles or small equipment, and less commonly used in large ship cranes.
