Summary: The core principle of the hydraulic turbine generator brake is to use pneumatic/hydraulic drive to compress the rotor brake ring and generate frictional resistance torque (mechanical braking) during the low-speed shutdown stage, or use stator short-circuit excitation to generate reverse electromagnetic torque (electrical braking), forcing the unit to stop quickly to protect the thrust bearing oil film.
The core working principle of the hydraulic generator brake:
Mechanical braking: When the speed of the unit drops to 25%~35% of the rated speed, compressed air (or pressure oil) is introduced to push the piston, causing the brake shoe to lift up and press tightly against the brake ring fixed on the rotor, using dry friction to generate braking torque until the machine stops.
Electrical braking: When the speed drops to 60%~70% of the rated value, it is activated to short-circuit the three-phase output of the generator and apply a constant excitation current to the rotor. The armature reaction is used to generate electromagnetic braking torque in the opposite direction of rotation, converting kinetic energy into thermal energy for consumption.
Hydraulic braking (impact only): Open the dedicated brake nozzle, and the water flow is directed towards the back of the bucket to generate a reverse impact torque for braking.
Comparison of Two Mainstream Methods for Hydraulic Generator Brakes:
Mechanical braking: simple structure, strong braking force, accurate positioning; But there are issues of brake shoe wear, dust pollution, and heat generation.
Electrical braking: no wear, clean, can significantly reduce the frequency of mechanical braking use; But it is not available when complex control is required and internal faults occur, and is often used as a supplementary or preceding means of mechanical braking.
