Summary: The core of the working process of a belt brake is that the actuating device drives the brake belt to tighten and clamp the brake drum, generating frictional braking torque to achieve locking. After releasing the actuation, the brake belt is released and rotated by the reset mechanism.
Braking stage of belt brake (tightening):
Signal input and actuation: Control oil pressure (or mechanical/electromagnetic force) to enter the servo cylinder/lever mechanism, pushing the piston or swinging the lever.
Tightening of brake band: The piston pulls the movable end of the brake band through a push rod or directly, causing the flexible brake band wrapped around the brake drum to contract radially.
Friction locking: The friction material lining the brake band tightly presses the rotating brake drum, generating friction torque; Utilize the "self increasing force" wedge effect (if the direction matches) to amplify the braking force, fix the connected planetary gear components (such as the sun gear and ring gear), and cut off or change the power transmission.
Controlled Sliding Friction: In the initial stage, slight sliding friction is allowed to avoid impact, followed by complete locking (some designs require regular adjustment of clearance to prevent slipping and erosion).
Release stage of belt brake (release):
Pressure relief/reverse oil supply: Cut off the brake oil pressure and drain the oil, and some structures simultaneously inject relief oil pressure to the other side of the piston.
Function of return spring: The return spring pushes the piston to move in the opposite direction, pulling the movable end of the brake band away from the brake drum.
Gap recovery: The brake band relaxes, the brake drum and connected components resume free rotation, and the braking is completely released.
Differences in work with different structures
Simple formula: One end is fixed, the other end is tightened at a single point, the one-way braking torque is large, and the reverse direction is small.
Differential type: The lever is linked at both ends, with a tightening amount greater than the loosening amount, requiring less external force but with a larger stroke. It is commonly used for manual one-way braking.
Comprehensive: Tighten both ends simultaneously and have equal force arms, with consistent forward and reverse braking torque, suitable for bidirectional braking situations.
