The Basic Elements of Stainless Steel Material Handling Crane Coupling

1. Torque and Speed

Handling these is the primary role of a coupling. Your coupling supplier needs to understand both. Note that couplings are designed with an overload capacity, typically 200% of the catalog torque limit, to accommodate starting loads.

2. Service Factors

Where will the coupling be installed and what conditions will it encounter? For example, if it is installed outdoors and exposed to UV, ozone, cold temperatures, and moisture, a flexible coupling may no longer be suitable. Ask for a coupling that has been proven in your application and consider the manufacturer's recommendations.

3. Available Space

These two factors are the clearance between the shafts and the clearance around the shafts. Some couplings, especially flexible couplings used in high-power and high-torque applications, have larger outside diameters, so determine any limitations.

When considering space limitations, you may come across "torque density" or "power density." This is the rated torque divided by the outside diameter. Gear couplings have the highest torque density numbers.

4. Require Precision

In the context of couplers, this refers to:

Tolerances for angular and offset misalignment (you may need to substitute one for the other)

Backlash (an important consideration in precision motion control)

Torsion (technically called torsional deflection)

For each of these, determine the acceptable limits and communicate them to your supplier.

5. Accessibility and maintainability considerations

If the coupling is difficult to access, it is important to select couplings that have long life, low maintenance requirements, and are easy to repair/replace. For example, avoid couplings that require lubrication (such as gear couplings) and consider couplings that are serviceable, where only the flexible element needs to be replaced. (Grid coupling elements are generally the least expensive.)
